The Senate Finance Committee defeated the 'public option' for health care, 15-8. All 10 republicans voted against the proposal, with 5 of the 13 Democrats on the committee voting against.
From AP:
All 10 Republicans on the committee voted against the proposal to allow the government to compete directly with insurance companies, Sen. Olympia Snowe among them. Democrats are hoping the Maine lawmaker will eventually break ranks with her party and support the legislation.
Also opposed were [Senate Finance Committee chair Max] Baucus [(D-MT)] and fellow Democrats Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, Bill Nelson of Florida and Tom Carper of Delaware.
Update: The second 'public option' also failed in committee,
13-10. Three Democrats voted against this amendment, MSNBC reports:
Democratic Sens. Baucus, Conrad, and Lincoln voted no, joining all Republicans.
