Glenn Reynolds links to a list of the
20 best-read cities in America.
I note that the top five cities in the list are, in order: 1) Cambridge, MA; 2) Alexandria, VA; 3) Berkeley, CA; 4) Ann Arbor, MI; and 5) Boulder, CO.
This brings to mind a quote I like from John Milton's poem,
Paradise Regained:
... many books,
Wise men have said, are wearisome; who reads
Incessantly, and to his reading brings not
A spirit and judgment equal or superior,
(And what he brings what needs he elsewhere seek?)
Uncertain and unsettled still remains,
Deep-versed in books and shallow in himself...
