Dublin (Rooters) -- A backlash of angry responses from conservative Irishmen is being reported after Democratic Party vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden recently stated that he believes the election of Sarah Palin to vice president 'would be a step back for women.'
Told of Biden's comment, conservative Dublin bar owner Thomas James O' Hanlon IV responded, "Is that how he feels, does he? Well, I think his election would set back the Irish for decades. What does he think of that? The bastard."
One American tourist in Dublin, Naperville, IL, native Jim Dillon, responded in the same vein.
"So Senator Biden thinks Palin's election would be a step back for women, huh? Good for him. I think he sets those of us with Irish ancestry back at least 150 years. He can blow soda bread out of his ass for all I care," said the feisty Irish importer/exporter.
Dillon's business partner, Henlopen Acres, DE, native Art Vandelay, thought it was much ado about nothing.
"Who cares? He's already set back Delaware enough. What do I care about the Irish? ... You're not going to print that last part, are you?"
I'm sorry that you think it's silly, but the simple fact is that electing a candidate who opposes women's rights is a step back for women. If simply getting somebody into a job was all it took to make things better for the gender/race/ethnicity they belong to, Affirmative Action quotas would be an unqualified success, not a demonized practice.

While I do think it's silly -- I think much of what Dems like Biden say is silly -- my real point is those who are surprised that a Dem like Biden would say this.
And by the way, who says Palin 'opposes women's rights'?
If she opposes equal pay, access to birth control, legal and safe abortion, and other positions that allow women to make their own choices, take charge of their lives, and protect their own health, then she opposes women's rights. I'd probably have more to work with, if she'd done any talking about her positions when she accepted the nomination.

Actually, she doesn't oppose equal pay and she doesn't oppose access to birth control.
Since she hasn't articulated any positions of her own, I have to assume she is at least close to her running mate, who has voted against equal pay and birth control.
She isn't pro-life. As governor she's significantly cut funding for shelters that support pregnant teenage mothers, giving them a place to live while they carry their babies to term. She's anti-abortion, and that is against women's rights; it means that she finds women unfit to make the moral/financial/health decisions surrounding their own bodies, and feels that the power to make those decisions should be taken away and given to the government.
