Kruschchev was happy when Kennedy replaced Ike, because he suspected he could shove around a former (unsuccessful) PT boat commander, while Eisenhower would have told Nikita something to the effect of 'I should have taken you commies out when I had a chance'. Amphibious attack on Cuba? It was already in Ike's repatoire.
Yeah, Putin would really like to have Obama to push around- hell, BHO can't even bring himself stand up and vote in the legislature. And it does sound like Biden is worried that Obama is not ready for prime time...
What Joe Biden said is absolutely true. One of our enemies will test Obama. The Chinese tested Bush by shooting down one of our surveilance planes within the first few months of his administration. We forget that because of 9/11. The thing that did not make it into this quote is that Biden said "what they will find is that this guy has a spine made of steel."
There is nothing wrong with tests as long as you pass them, and if sometone tests his mettle and he overcomes the canllenge that will shape the rest of his term in office in very positive ways. The other thing to consider is that Biden was not on the stump but he was speaking to members of the foreign policy establishment and laying the groundwork for what any reasonable foreign policy expert expects.
The point Biden seems to make, I think, is that while enemies of the US will test Obama, we might not like his response, but to stick with it, because it will be the right one.
Just like Biden has done with Bush's foreign policy, non? Also, I think you've got a couple of additional things wrong here, Rusty. First, the "spine of steel" comment was made at another speech, not this one. And second, this speech wasn't made before "members of the foreign policy establishment," as you assert; it was made at a Seattle fundraiser, one of two Biden made that day.
What I read here is that Biden is already lowering expectations for
an Obama presidency. Foreign policy disaster--get ready for it.
“And he’s gonna need help. And the kind of help he’s gonna need is, he’s gonna need you - not financially to help him - we’re gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it’s not gonna be apparent initially, it’s not gonna be apparent that we’re right.”
Two things. One, if that last line doesn't scare the bejebus out of you, given Obamas past associations and the way his team operates before the election, you must not enjoy your freedom. Two, it didn't seem to work that way for W. They want their supporters to go out and stop the right from doing the very same thing that the left has done for the last 6 to 8 yaers. Good luck with that.
Obama: "I am not afraid"
Yoda: "You will be!" (I honestly don't think Obama really knows what he is in for.) |
