Has The Treatment of Bush Been a Disgrace?

Former Sen. John Kerry legal intern Jeffrey Scott Shapiro thinks so.

He writes:

It seems that no matter what Mr. Bush does, he is blamed for everything. He remains despised by the left while continuously disappointing the right.

Yet it should seem obvious that many of our country's current problems either existed long before Mr. Bush ever came to office, or are beyond his control. Perhaps if Americans stopped being so divisive, and congressional leaders came together to work with the president on some of these problems, he would actually have had a fighting chance of solving them.
...

The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace. The attacks launched against him have been cruel and slanderous, proving to the world what little character and resolve we have. The president is not to blame for all these problems.

I agree with these sentiments, but that's how modern politics is practiced...

Just as a conversation starter:

Being president is much like being the quarterback of a pro football team. They get too much credit when the team wins and too much blame when the team looses. That being said...

The right wing still loves to blame Jimmy Carter for stuff and even goes so far as to blame FDR. Clinton still takes a pounding in many right wing circles.

Has Bush done some good things - Yea. Has he been the worst president ever - Probably not.

Saying that problems existed before Bush came into office does not absolve him from at least making the attempt to ameliorate them. Saying that problems are beyond his control is just a cop out. Jimmy Carter took a lot of blame for economic woes that were due in large part to OPEC putting the squeeze on us.

Being a loose lefty liberal I will continue to blame Bush for everything from bad weather to my own smokers cough just on general principle.

Yeah, Bush has taken it on the proverbial chin.

But he didn't exactly try and reduce the size of the Federal government now did he? He stumbled into some things that worked out really quite well for him and still managed to abandon the conservative message.

I'm at a loss to explain Bush. Terrible disappointment here.

Still, he's better than Kerry. Probably...
