Blagojevich to Name Roland Burris to Replace Obama in US Senate

Chicago and Illinois politics at its finest. Pass the popcorn.

Update: In an ironic twist, Roland Burris was appointed to his first state government job in 1973 by Illinois Governor Dan Walker -- who later went to the hoosegow, one of three Illinois governors since 1960 to end up wearing prison garb (there have been seven elected governors during this period).

Update II: Illinois Gov. Blagojevich's press conference introducing Roland Burris as his Senate appointee replacing President-elect Obama was terrific theater and a giant 'F&#$ You' to Blago's former political allies now calling for his head.

All that was missing was Blago flipping the bird to everyone present at the press conference... ah, Chicago politics.

Has Obama even formally resigned his Senate seat?

If not, Obama could hold that resignation back until Blago is impeached, or the legislature changes the rules on filling vacancies; so long as one of these happens before Jan. 20th.

Obama has resigned his seat. The Illinois Secretary of State, Jessie White, must certify the senate appointment. He has said repeatedly thet he will not do so. Fun.

Actually, there is no statutory or constitutional requirement for the Illinois Sec-State to certify. It's a tradition, but there is no requirement. Also, under a nearly-forty-year-old precedent involving another corrupt Democrat, the U.S. Senate has no discretion to bar Blago's appointee.

The voters of Illinois are another matter, but since the Dems blocked the GOP proposal to strip the governor of his appointment power, the voters won't get to speak until 2010.

I believe in Chicago this is referred to as "change."
