He got into politics in Chicago. He is a Democrat. He is a shrewd, calculating politician with a penchant for winning elections. So What. He is not Richie Daley's toadie, he is not Jesse Jackson's bootlick, he doesn't seem to have worked for the mob or a hedge fund. The only thing that can make the "Chicago Democrat" label stick is if something is actually found on the guy or if "The Media" obsesses on finding something, however trivial, and blowing it out of proportion.
Maybe the narrative will be tainted by the Blago thing, or the other prosecutions that are sure to flow from the Fitzgerald investigations. At the end of the day if he is not found to have done anything illegal, unethical or untoward all the shouts of "Chicago Democrat" will amount to nothing but farts in the wind. What "some on the right" are hoping for is that some tenuous and strained scandal will surface that will somehow impede the progress that the majority of voters in this country want. Just a word to the wise...After 2 years of throwing poop at Obama nothing has appeared to stick. Not Rezko, not Jeremiah Wright, not Bill Ayers, Not Blago, not his middle name, not his youthful drug use, Not the Indonesian "madrassa", Not the Terrorist Fist Bump, not his birth certificate, nothing. Hillary's hatchet men found nothing of value. The RNC's dirt diggers found nothing. Fitzgerald found nothing. Bupkis, nada, zilch, zippo. Unless he is found to have committed adultery, which is unlikely, nothing will stick to him. I hope that the media narrative follows the "what is the problem and how can we fix it" path rather than the "he is from Chicago, He is a Democrat so he has to be corrupt" path or the "Jor El sent him from Krypton to save humanity" path. I just want smart guys working hard to solve problems. Is that too much to ask?
Happy New Year, Rusty!
Glad to see that your penchant for straw men is intact into the new year! My beef with the Obama narrative is the ludicrous nature of the campaign -- claiming that he is a reform politician, yes, from Chicago. At best, President-elect Obama was a 'go along to get along' pol. Nothing inherently wrong with that -- except he ran as a 'change agent' -- and the press never examined his background in any kind of depth. His first election should have been examined more closely, yet only four mainstream outlets even covered it (Chicago Trib, WSJ, CNN, and the Austin Statesman. In point of fact, Obama never had a real contested election (except for the one in 2000 against Bobby Rush for the House) until his primary race for president. Given the nature of Chicago politics -- which is all about family connections -- his rise is certainly worthy of examination. But nothing. Additionally, seeing as the Dems ran a 2006 mid-term, the basis of which was about 'the culture of corruption' (and masterminded by Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel), I see nothing wrong with questioning the accuracy of Obama's image. One more request: Bone up on how Chicago politics works before you come in here and throw crap around. You may not like reading that, but that's the way it is. I guarantee you'll be less embarrassed down the road.
While I am certainly no expert on Chicago politics I did live briefly in Rostenkowski's district and met the people who voted for the guy that their precinct captain told them to vote for no questions asked. I have friends who are life long Chicago residents who are politically active and have read enough to know how crooked the city is. I partied with the States Attorney for Cook County. I worked for a guy who's father ordered an infamous hit on the Black Panthers back in the day. I know that the Chicago Mob actually fixed the election for Kennedy. I met a guy who actually took part in the effort. What the hell did Richie Daley ever do to deserve to be mayor other than to have his father's name and the machine that daddy built. I understand that it is old school machine politics that would have made Boss Tweed blush. I get it.
I say go ahead and pry into every nook and cranny of Obama's background, every detail of his elections, all of his connections to Chicago politics, politicians and political patrons. I say question the image all you want. Nothing wrong with it. Good for the process to have a "loyal opposition" constantly trying to discredit the other guys. Sick Wes Pruden on him, or that Richard Mellon Scaife guy or whoever is doing investigative work for the NY Post these days. If there is anything actually there all of the others except MSNBC will jump on gladly. I just don't think that there is anything of substance there. Do you think that if there was that Roger Ailes wouldn't have been all over it like stink on rice? I just don't think that there was a willful whitewash of his background by the MSM. I don't believe in the Liberal Media Conspiracy. I know that you do but I don't buy it. Media companies are in business to sell advertising and nothing drives eyeballs to media like a good scandal (or a missing white girl). If there was anything there they would have been all over it. The point that I was trying to make is that people don't want to hear it, and by people I mean people who consume media. The general public is more interested in what their politicians are going to do rather than what they have done unless what they have done concerns blow jobs from people other than their wives or bags full of cash exchanged for petty favors. It sucks but it is true. The other point I was trying to make is the penchant on the Republican side to go over the top with guilt by association without anything of substance to back up the claims. They didn't spend any meaningful time debunking the Change thing because all Obama really had to do to win was not be a Republican and keep his dick in his pants. He managed to do both. He also raised a huge pile of cash and ran a masterful campaign. Give him a little credit for that. At the end of the day I think that Obama will wind up being a Democrat from Chicago and not a Chicago Democrat.
Love ya, Rusty. But like I said, you need to bone up on your knowledge of Chicago politics.
The "I don't think there is anything there" defense is not something with which you want to stick. And if you don't think the media cheerleads for the Dems via 'objective reporting,' then we'll just have to agree to disagree while I hope you don't get approached by the guys hawking the shell game...
I'm not saying that there will be nothing there. I am saying that there will be nothing there of substance that anyone other than partisans will pay attention to.
Oh, and another word of advice...when playing the shell game always take the shell on the left!
No, no, no! Always -- always -- take the middle shell.
Or was that the shell on the left? I can't remember... |
